Prerequisites
CJA001 Czech Language - Introduction && CJA002 ModCz Phonetics and Phonology && CJA009 ModCz Word-formation && CJA010 ModCz Syntax && CJA014 ModCz Lexicology && CJC040 Theory of Lit.
Students are expected to pass the courses in phonetics and phonology, morphology and word-formation, syntax and lexicology before taking the course in stylistics. This requirement also applies to the introductory linguistic course - Úvod... and to courses in litarary theory. A lecture in stylistics (CJBB80) is recommended, if offered in the particular term.

Course objectives
The main aim of the seminar is to provide the students with skills necessary for analyzing texts of all kinds from the viewpoint of stylistics.
Syllabus
  • The course is divided into several mutually linked modules, focused on the above-mentioned skills. Each module consists of theoretical and practical sections, theoretical topics dealt with include: 1) Style and stylistics, stylistic factors, stylistic values, stylistic dissimilation, 2) Possible techniques of stylistic analysis, 3) Dichotomies of form and function, 4) Composition and style, 5) Varieties of Czech; usage, norm, codification, 6) Colloquial style, 7) Technical style, 8) Style of administration, 9) Journalistic style plus style of advertising, 10) Oratory style, 12) Style of fiction. The final module is focused on summarization and revisions.

Teaching methods
The course consists of seminars which develop students’ capability to apply theoretical and methodological knowledge on assigned materials.
Assessment methods
Regular participation in seminars (the minimum attendance is 75% of seminars actually held during the term) and a written stylistic analysis are prerequisites to the oral exam; further information is given below.
