Course objectives
The course develops and extends knowledge and skills received from the course Translator seminar I (publicistic translation) focused on translation of simple journalistic and publicistic texts from Czech into Russian. The focal point of the seminar is a common search for optimal and variant methods of translation of concrete predetermined texts. Preparing for the seminar will consist of acquaintance with a given text, its correct reading and finding key words and problematic words, collocation, syntactic and stylistic phenomena and figures and their possible variants of translation. Students will be able to use the main methods of translation and different kinds of equivalence on the basis of their theoretical knowledge. Students will discuss all their individual translation variants of the same text, in order to learn elementary rules of translation criticism. These translations will be judged in relation to an appropriate approach for resolving problems of translation at the lexical, syntactic, textual and stylistic level.
