Prerequisites
The knowledge of English at the grammar school level. Ability to use skills which are practised in the first two semesters -see the syllabus of individual semesters.

Course objectives
The exam is on B1 level B1 according to ERR. For a successfull passing of the exam it is recommended to attend the first two semesters of English for specific Purposes.
The main objectives of the course are the following:
1)students should be able to communicate in common situations
2)students should be able to use the reading skills for reading specialist tests
3)students should be able to understand recordings
4)students should be able to the use writing skills for producing C.V. and job application
5)students should use grammar in the right way Exam:
A. Written part:

b) general and specialized topics from the field of study
Syllabus
  • 1.Written part:
  • Academic part (academic grammar, matching, logical linking, word formation, definitions); Grammar on intermediate level (e.g. textbook Headway intermediate, Opportunities intermediate etc.); Specialist text - dictionary can be used(understanding the text: main idea, logical linking,true or false statements, synonyms );
  • 2.Oral part:
  • Survival English (communication in common situations in life); coversational topics: 1)Giving personal details, introductions, family; 2)Asking and telling the way, orientation in a town, city transport, taxi; 3)Shopping (food, clothes), eating out; 4)Travelling – by train, by bus, by air (at the airport etc.); 5)Seeing a doctor – explain your problem; 6)Flat, house, accommodation; 7)Leisure time activities, entertainment, sports and games; 8)In a hotel, in a hostel, in a camp; 9)Describing people (character, feelings, emotions – positive, negative, likes, dislikes); 10)Weather, climate; The exam concentrates on testing the communication skills. Students choose one of the above mentioned topics. Then they get a concrete task within the topic (e.g. you are buying a ticket from London to Oxford at the station; you are at the doctor – explain what troubles you have etc.).
  • Specialist topics (about 10 topics): Topics for oral part / Biology: - ACADEMIC LIFE, UNIVERSITY, BIOLOGY; - CELLS (e.g. structure, cloning); - MICROORGANISMS (e.g. bacteria); - PLANTS – PHYSIOLOGY (e.g. photosynthesis); - MORPHOLOGY (e.g. plant system); - ANIMALS – PHYSIOLOGY (e.g. circulatory system); - MORPHOLOGY (e.g. body parts); - HUMANS; - CLASSIFICATION OF SPECIES; - DIVERSITY AND EVOLUTION; - INTERACTIONS OF ORGANISMS (e.g. ecology, behaviour). Within the scope of the topics you can be asked to compare particular species, to describe causes and effects of some phenomena, describe a process, etc. Classification; Cause and effect; Comparing; Describing (appearance, process). Topics for oral part / chemistry: 1.Studying at University, Academic Life, Chemistry 2.Chemical Processes and Reactions 3.Elements and the Periodic Table 4.Inorganic Compounds and their Nomenclature 5.Plastics and Other Organic Compounds 6.Matter – its Classification (Liquids, Gases etc.) and Properties 7.The Atom and Bonding 8.In a Laboratory 9.Biochemistry 10.The Environment You should be able to talk about the topics in general (e.g. to describe main types of compounds). Within the scope of the topics you should be able to choose something specific and describe it in more detail (i.e.one famous chemist, a specific process/reaction, an element, a compound, an experiment).
  • Topics for oral part / Geologists: 1.Studying at Masaryk university (structure, management, lessons, courses); 2.Scientific methods (How does a scientist work?); 3.What is the Earth? (forms of matter, spheres, layers of the interior); What is earth science? (sciences studying the earth); 4.Minerals (physical properties, classification); 5.Rocks (classification, the rock cycle, texture); 6.Weathering (types of weathering, causes and speed of weathering); 7.Erosion (agents, formation of a river valley, glacier, controlling erosion); 8.Deposition (agents, formation); 9.Volcanoes (volcanic landforms, where volcanoes occur); 10.Earthquakes ( folds, faults, origin of an earthquake); 11.Plate tectonics (theories, the interior of the earth);
  • Topics for oral part / physics: 1)Studying at University (detailed knowledge); 2)Physics and physicists; 3)Matter – its classification and properties; 4)Energy; 5)Atoms; 6)Motion; 7)Solar system; 8)Time and space; 9)Light; 10)Universe; Topics for oral part / mathematics: - ACADEMIC LIFE, UNIVERSITY, MATHEMATICS; - BASIC MATHEMATICAL OPERATIONS (e.g. mental arithmetic); - ROMAN AND ARABIC NUMERALS (e.g. differences, history); - PYTHAGORAS'S THEOREM; - LINES, ANGLES AND TRIANGLES; - SETS (e.g. numbers, geometrical figures, notation); - PROPORTION; - VARIOUS KINDS OF AVERAGE (e.g. arithmetical mean, mode etc.); - FUNCTIONS AND THEIR DESCRIPTION; - NUMBER SYSTEM (e.g. classification); - SOLIDS (e.g. classification, comparing); Within the scope of the topics you can be asked to compare numbers, figures and solids, describe graphs, classify numbers and geometrical figures, etc.
