Course objectives
The subject Intensive nursing care ranks among theoretical - practical subjects. The goal is to explain the characteristics of nursing in the intensive care unit (ICU), and practice specific nursing activities. The subject is based on the other special subjects, particularly nursing procedures and preclinical medicine. Teaching is located in a specialized classroom, which simulates hospital environment. Lessons follow general standards of the nursing procedures and work according to the evidence based medicine/nursing. The students follow the health protection and safety standards. They are also led to respect of patients' rights, choose an individual approach for each patient and understanding of communication specifics.
Learning outcomes
The student will be able: characterize the nursing specifics in the ICU; describe the ICU setting - types of ICU, specific devices, staff requirements; explain the care for catheters and other invasive lines; describe non-invasive and invasive procedures (therapeutic hypothermia, defibrillation, cardioversion,...); monitor vital functions; list the ways and risks of the oxygenotherapy; clarify the basics of the mechanical ventilation; describe nursing care of the unconscious patient; explain the specifics of polytrauma;
Syllabus
  • The nursing specifics in the ICU. ICU setting - types of ICU, specific devices, staff requirements. The care for catheters and other invasive lines. Non-invasive and invasive procedures (therapeutic hypothermia, defibrillation, cardioversion,...). Monitor vital functions. The ways and risks of the oxygenotherapy. The basics of the mechanical ventilation. Nursing care of the unconscious patient. The specifics of polytrauma.
