Course objectives
Nursing Practice V is a practical subject that builds on previous nursing practice and integrates knowledge of nursing theory and practice, basic science disciplines, natural, social and behavioral sciences and provides the acquisition, consolidation and deepening of nursing knowledge and skills in selected medical fields fields. The course takes the form of direct and indirect patient care, in accordance with the applicable legislation, and enables students to apply the theoretical knowledge and practical skills acquired by studying theoretical-practical disciplines in the conditions of a health care provider. The content of the course is practical activity of students in the form of block clinical internships within selected clinical disciplines: neurology, psychiatry, ophthalmology, infectious medicine and also within community and home care. The aim of the internships is the ability to apply the nursing process to patients with neurological, psychiatric, ocular and infectious diseases, as well as to patients in the home environment and also to provide medical-preventive, educational and nursing activities in the general practitioner for adults or general practitioners for children and adolescents or dental clinic. Another aim of the internships is to acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills from the above mentioned fields, including specific nursing habits. The practice takes the form of block instruction under the guidance of mentors, it can also take place in continuous operation, in the inpatient and outpatient department. It is implemented by health service providers in Brno and outside Brno. The completed internships, activities, performances and other activities within the nursing practice are recorded in the Logbook of Nursing Practice (Logbook).
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
be familiar with the operation of the health service provider's facilities;
obey the rules of occupational health and safety and fire protection;
observe the principles of safety of care;
adhere to the principles of barrier nursing care;
use and maintain medical and nursing documentation; orientate in nursing and medical terminology;
to perform nursing activities and procedures according to established criteria and in accordance with the latest scientific knowledge (Evidence Based Nursing);
implement individual and group health education methods;
participate in comprehensive care in collaboration with other health care professionals; strengthen communication skills;
understand the specifics and organization of care in neurology; to understand basic diagnoses in neurology and their clinical manifestations; identify the needs of patients with neurological disease;
apply the nursing process to patients with neurological disease;
understand the specifics and organization of psychiatric care;
to understand basic diagnoses in psychiatry and their clinical manifestations; communicate properly with psychiatric patients;
identify the needs of patients with psychiatric disease;
apply the nursing process to patients with psychiatric disease;
understand the specifics and organization of care in ophthalmology;
to understand basic diagnoses in ophthalmology and their clinical manifestations; identify the needs of patients with eye disease;
apply the nursing process to patients with eye disease;
understand the specifics and organization of care in infectious medicine; to understand the basic diagnoses in infectious medicine and their clinical manifestations; identify the needs of patients with infectious diseases;
apply the nursing process to patients with infectious diseases;
understand the organization of community and home care;
to provide medical-preventive, educational and nursing activities in community and home care.
