Prerequisites

No prior knowledge of Japanese is required. Students are required to register this course together with course JPNN10. The course is dedicated for students not enrolled in the Japanese studies programme. The course is taught in Czech.

Course objectives
The course is designed to develop the skills in reading and writing basic Japanese. No prior knowledge of written Japanese is required. The course starts with the introduction of hiragana and katakana, approximately 20 kanji will also be introduced during the semester. Students will be able to read and write Japanese on simple everyday topics at the end of the course.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able to
define all characters of hiragana and katakana and approx. 20 kanji characters;
explain the usage of learned characters in reading, writing and transcribing simple Japanese texts;
apply the knowledge of the characters in reading, writing and transcribing simple Japanese words and sentences;
inspect the correctness of transcription of simple Japanese text;
formulate and write down elementary sentences;
assess the usage of learned characters in writing and transcribing simple texts.

  • 0. Introduction to the course;
  • 1. Introduction to Japanese writing system, hiragana: a-ko;
  • 2. Exercise in reading and writing, hiragana: sa-to;
  • 3. Exercise in reading and writing, hiragana: na-ho;
  • 4. Exercise in reading and writing, hiragana: ma-ro;
  • 5. Exercise in reading and writing, voiced and half-voiced sounds, double consonants, hiragana: wa-n;
  • 6. Double vowels, combined sounds, exercises, review of hiragana;
  • 7. Exercise in reading and writing, katakana: a-so;
  • 8. Exercise in reading and writing, katakana: ta-ho;
  • 9. Exercise in reading and writing, katakana: ma-wo,
  • 10. A theoretical introduction to kanji, selected kanji;

Teaching methods
Lectures, exercises in reading and writing Japanese.
Assessment methods
Final written test (score 70% or higher on the final exam). Students are expected and required to attend seminar classes of this course.
