Course objectives
The course is designed for students of single-subject studies of the Upper Secondary School Teacher Training in the Latin Language and Literature as a supplement to the Didactics of the Latin Language II. Its aim is to develop students’ theoretical knowledge of Latin didactics by applying particular didactic concepts in practical teaching tasks. The focus is on the application of modern technology.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:
- propose a particular concept of Latin teaching in a particular group of students;
- prepare materials for teaching particular grammatical phenomena;
- prepare a commentary on particular reading assignments (authors of Latin literature);
- prepare materials for teaching particular cultural and historical topics;
- devise various types of achievement tests.
Students of combined studies who simultaneously study the Upper Secondary School Teacher Training in another living language will be able to prepare materials for the use of Latin in the instruction of a living language.
Syllabus
  • The course is based on the syllabus of the Didactics of the Latin Language II and offers practical tasks and activities related to individual topics covered in Latin didactics.
  • 1. teaching grammar and reading skills;
  • 2. interactive methods of instruction;
  • 3. group and project instruction;
  • 4. teaching realia (cultural, literary, and historical topics from antiquity up to present day);
  • 5. Latin in contemporary world (terminology, Latin borrowings in Czech and other languages);
  • 6. games in Latin teaching;
  • 7. uses of technology in class, e-learning;
  • 8. teaching plan, arrangement of individual activities, practical teaching

Teaching methods
Discussion about the didactic topics covered in class, group work with secondary sources, practical instruction units for fellow students, mock instruction analysis.
Assessment methods
Presentation evaluation, feedback from fellow students and teacher during discussion, class attendance (75%). All written materials produced within the course become a part of student’s portfolio.
