Course objectives
The course offers an introduction and reflexion of basic didactic approaches to foreign language teaching and the specifics of teaching Latin as a dead language. The course aims to introduce students to various goals of Latin teaching (e.g. instruction focused on Latin terminology, original texts, culture and history) and to provide an overview of various didactic methods for their achievement.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:
- describe and comment on various didactic approaches to foreign language teaching;
- summarize basic concepts related to the efficiency of language acquisition;
- apply basic pedagogical and didactic concepts in Latin teaching;
- describe complex methods of teaching and plan their practical use;
- introduce various goals of Latin teaching and argue about their attainability ;
- describe various approaches to Latin teaching and evaluate their pros and cons.
Syllabus
  • 1. various approaches to foreign language teaching, specifics of Latin as a dead language;
  • 2. various goals of Latin teaching with regard to various school types (vocational vs. high schools), students’ age, number of instruction units etc.;
  • 3. comparison of approaches to Latin teaching (traditional vs. alternative methods);
  • 4. research-oriented teaching in practice – elaboration of a specific interdisciplinary topic including shared reflection with students of Upper Secondary School Teacher Training in Latin Language and Literature, English language and literature, French language and literature, Spanish language and literature;
  • 5. theoretical background of the complex methods of teaching and the possibilities of their application in the teaching of Latin language and literature;
  • 6. Latin teaching practice in the Czech Republic and abroad, and its reflexion among classical philologists;
  • 7. textbooks and teaching materials for individual methods, including e-materials;
  • 8. Latin as a tool for developing reading and analytical skills;
  • 9. Latin as a languge of the European culture;
  • 10. project-based learning in practice – elaboration of a specific interdisciplinary topic including shared reflection with students of Upper Secondary School Teacher Training in Latin Language and Literature, English language and literature, French language and literature, Spanish language and literature;
  • 11. the so-called Living Latin and the limits of its use in class;
  • 12. motivation for promoting the Latin language, literature, and culture

Teaching methods
Lecture, discussion, reading assignments (didactic texts), group work with secondary sources, mock instruction analysis, paper preparation and presentation, research-oriented learning, project-based learning.
Assessment methods
Paper on an assigned scholarly text, paper discussion in class, class attendance (75%). All written materials produced within the course become a part of student’s portfolio.
