Course objectives
The aim of this course is to present the problems of studying, interpreting and translating Medieval Latin literature based on a particular text.
Learning outcomes
After successful completion of the course, students will be oriented in the problems of selected texts of educational and entertaining literature, they will be able to characterize the specific features of these texts and describe their broader context in Latin or Old Czech literature.

  • 1.-2. Bohemian university literature (Zikmund Albík z Uničova, Křišťan z Prachatic)
  • 3.-5. Medieval texts on physiognomy (Michael Scotus, Pseudo-Aristoteles, Pseudo-Alexander Hispanus)
  • 6.-8. Konrad of Hirsau, Dialogus super auctores
  • 9.-11. Iacobus de Cessolis, De ludo schacorum and its later adaptations
  • 12.-13. Entertaining and educational literature or genre goulash (Mensa philosophica, Summa recreatorum, Responsorium curiosorum)

One 2-hour seminar per week, reading (translation), class discussion.
Assessment methods
Type of teaching: seminar. Requirements: regular attendance in the course (min. 75%) and active participation in the class discussions; continuous reading of presented texts; written paper (translation with commentary).
