Course objectives
Mycology in general; this course complements the basic course (phylogeny of algae and fungi, in 1st year) and mycological practice. Fungi on the cell level, anatomy, morphology, vegetative body (thallus), reprodustion structures, genetics, nomenclature and work with fungal material.
Learning outcomes
Main outcomes can be summarized as follows:
providing of general essentials for scientific study of fungi;
learning of fungal body and its structures;
understanding of processes taking place in fungal body;
comparison with another groups of organisms.
Syllabus
  • Definition of "fungi" and "mycology", unifying characters and classification of fungi.
  • Historical occurrence and theories about the origin of fungi, trends in evolution, palaeontological documentation.
  • Fungal cell structure: cytoplasm and cytoplasmic membrane, cell organelles, nucleus, its division and cell cycle, cell wall structure.
  • Nutrition and metabolism: nutrition sources and intake, matters contained in fungal bodies.
  • Vegetative thallus: non-mycelial fungi; hyphae, their modification and hyphal structures, fungal tissues, lichen thallus, growth of fungal thalli.
  • Reproduction structures: reproduction vegetative, asexual and sexual.
  • Fungal genetics: homothalism and heterothalism, genetical analysis, individuals, populations and species.
  • Fruitbodies (carpophores) of fungi: sporocarps and similar structures, ascocarps and basidiocarps, anatomy of fruitbodies, hymenial elements.
  • Fungal spores: types of spores, their structure, sporulation, distribution and germination.
  • Nomenclature of fungi.
  • Cropping and determination, cultivation and conservation of fungi.
