The course extends the knowledge acquired in the Geographical Cartography and Geoinformatics courses in the field of thematic cartography.

Course objectives
The course aims to demonstrate the theoretical basis for the creation of thematic maps and the compositional elements of thematic maps. Furthermore, the links and relationships between information, content and content on thematic maps, map content, principles of legend creation, types and methods of value scaling. It will also introduce thematic maps and atlases of Czech, with a selection of world, production as a source of knowledge acquisition and their critical evaluation.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
- understand the basic theory of thematic cartography;
- apply the basic principles of map composition;
- evaluate the structure of thematical maps;
- use the basic principles of legend-making;
- create and use thematic maps and atlases.
Syllabus
  • Lectures: 1.Definition and definition of the terms thematic map (or thematic cartographic product), ways of subdivision of thematic maps. 2. Basic and superstructural compositional elements of thematic maps. 3. Map content and graphic clutter of thematic maps. 4. Map scales, value scales, creation of value scales, their internal form and division. 5. Methods for representing qualitative data in a map. 6. Methods for representing quantitative data. 7. Representation of quantitative data on a map. 8. Map design - addressing the purpose, title and design of map content. 9. Construction of working map, base map, compilation original, map mirror and map sheet layout. 10. Map legend, principles and process of its creation. 11. Cartographic anamorphosis - cartograms. 12. Selected production of thematic maps and atlases 13. Evaluation of thematic maps Practical exercise: 1. Mental thematic map 2. Training in  ArcGIS (coordinate systems, feature selection, etc.) 3. Geoprocessing tools 4. Composing a simple thematic map 5. Open source GIS (Quantum GIS) - basic introduction 6. Choropleth maps and Cartodiagrams 7. Value scales 8. Editing and georeferencing 9. Symbolism in thematic maps 10. Thematic map (semestral work)
