Prerequisites
Vorausgesetzt werden Deutschkenntnisse, die im rezeptiven Bereich (Hör- und Leseverstehen) in etwa der Stufe B2 des Gemeinsamen Europäischen Referenzrahmens, im produktiven Bereich (mündlicher und schriftlicher Ausdruck) in etwa der Stufe B1 des Referenzrahmens entsprechen. Außerdem wird erwartet, dass die Kursteilnehmer bereit sind, sich aktiv in das Unterrichtsgeschehen einzubringen.

Course objectives
The course aims at systematizing, consolidating and activating the students’ knowledge acquired during previous high school training. Special attention is devoted to reading and listening comprehension. As a main learning outcome of the course, students should advance from level B1 of the Common European Framework for Languages to level B2. By the end of the course, they should be able
- to understand dialogs and simple radio broadcasting in German,
- to read authentic texts which deal with topics covered during the semester and to extract the main points,
- to decode more complicated texts by using a dictionary, without the assistance of the teacher,
- to use common grammatical structures (e. g., governed prepositional phrases, infinitival constructions, relative clauses, German V2 and V-last sentences) in their own language production in an appropriate way.
Syllabus
  • - learning strategies (using dictionaries, expanding vocabulary, etc.),
  • - preparing an oral presentation,
  • - taking notes during listening comprehension,
  • - reading comprehension of a complex text without the assistance of the teacher,
  • - writing down plans for the future,
  • - lesson 1-4 from the textbook “Sicher” (topics: introducing oneself, invitations, celebrations, travelling, living; grammar: temporal adverbials, adjectives, governed prepositional phrases, verbs of movement, auxiliary “warden” in infinitival constructions, relative clauses).

Credits are acquired on the basis of:
- regular attendance (no more than three absences are tolerated),
- handing in the required homework (more detailed information will be given during the semester),
- passing a written test at the end of the semester (60 % is required).
