Course objectives
The aim of the course is to equip students with learning differences with skills and strategies that would enable them to cope better with reading texts in academic English. Students will get acquainted with different learning styles, different methods of reading, but also with word formation, text structures that will promote understanding of the text and thus work with them more effectively.
Syllabus
  • Unit 1: Learning styles, strategies, types and characteristic features of specialized/academic texts
  • Unit 2: Working with texts, different ways/techniques/methods of reading (intensive, extensive, skimming, scanning, sources and programmes on the Internet)
  • Unit 3: Word classes and their relations, sentence structures, word order in affirmative, negative sentences and questions (practice, various types of reading tasks – fill in, gap fill, word formation, collocations)
  • Unit 4: Structure of texts, paragraphs and their arrangement, study skills (practice with various specialized types of texts)
  • Unit 5: Loud and silent reading, pronunciation
  • Unit 6: Reading tasks, test strategies, practising various test reading tasks
