Course objectives
The aim of the lecture is to provide background for work in compulsory seminars of the same title. The phonological part follows the development of the phonological system from the split of Proto-Slavonic (10th ct.) to the present day. The period, circumstances, geographical range and causes of the individual phonological changes are observed in their mutual relations. The geographical range leads to the knowledge of dialectal differentiation. The morphological part follows the development of categories and forms during the whole period dealt with. Knowledge of the rules of development results into stating the dynamism of development of the present-day situation. Aims of the course: students will acquire a complex notion of the development of the phonological system of Czech and of the development of Czech declension and conjugation.
Learning outcomes
Having participated in the course, students will be able:
- to identify main phonological and morphological processes/changes (forming of diphthongs, monophthongs, umlaut, vocal raising, palatalization, de-palatalization, assimilation, dissimilation, cyclic changes, reductions, grammaticalization, re-analysis, case syncretism),
- to apply these universally-functioning processes on the interpretation of phonological and morphological structure of Czech,
- to explain the period, circumstances, geographical range and causes of the individual changes,
- to interpret the present-day situation of Czech on the basis of its historical development,
- to explain the origin of Czech dialects on the basis of different geographical range of specific phonological and morphological changes.
