Course objectives

The course focuses on the knowledge of the church, political and cultural history of Central-Eastern, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe to the end of the 15th century. On the basis of a commented analysis of the sources accompanied by an interpretation, the students will be acquainted with the key factors, which influences in a fundamental way the development of this part of Europe. These include, for example: - Byzantium and the ecumene formed by it - the emergence and promotion of the Orthodox forms of Christianity
- the raids of Asian nomads - the activity of the Chivalric Orders in the Baltic lands
- the specific formation of the states and their specific administration and government. Great emphasis will be places on knowledge of the differences between Eastern and Western Europe and on the awareness of the common features and values to the Christian basis of mature Europe.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to: - understand the specifics of the development of Eastern Europe in the Middle Ages, describe the differences between Western and Eastern Christianity, demonstrate the basic causes of the differences in the development between Western and Eastern Europe, justify the role of the Byzantine Empire and the nomads in the history of Eastern Europe, explain the role and the importance of the Orthodox Church in the history of Eastern Europe, define the circumstances of the rise of the despotic regimes, compare the specifics in the development of the Polish-Lithuanian Union and the Muscovite State.

• 2. The ethnogenesis of the Slavs
• 3. State formation of southern and eastern Slavs
• 4. The Orthodox Church and its socio-cultural role and significance
• 5. The Christianisation of southern and eastern Slavs
• 6. The Baltics in the Middle Ages
• 7. The Turko-Tatar nomads and the consequences of their invasions
• 8. The origin of national states: Poland, Lithuania, Duchy of Moscow in the 14th and 15th centuries
• 9. The Kiev metropolis of all Ruthenians and its role in the 14th and 15th centuries
• 10. The Polish-Lithuanian Union and the consequences of its foundation
• 11. Church Union as a means of ordering religious relationships in Eastern Europe in the 14th and 15th centuries
• 12. The Muscovite (Russian) ruler as the Orthodox Tsar
• 13. The Byzantine legacy in the history of Eastern Europe
