Students are eligible to sit the final master state examination if they have successfully passed the final bachelor state examination, they have obtained all the compulsory and facultative subjects credits, they have obtained the credits from the subjects which are compulsory for all students of the Faculty of Arts at Masaryk University and they have submitted their diploma thesis or (in case students submit their diploma thesis in a different field of studies) their final thesis, which has been accepted by their tutor.

Course objectives
Final master state examination consists of a diploma thesis defence (with diploma studies) and an examination according to paragraphs 22, 23 and 24 of the Study and Examination Regulations. Dates of final master state examinations (usually one in each examination period) are announced by the head of the department. Diploma theses defences only take place twice a year, in June and in January.
The final master state examination consists of a written part and an oral part; both of the parts must be taken in the same examination period. Students sit the written part of the examination first; students who do not successfully pass the written test cannot take the oral part of the examination.
Aim: final master state examination tests the knowledge acquired in compulsory (and possibly also facultative) subjects of the master cycle of studies.

  • Requirements for the Final State Examination, M.A.:
  • 1. Excellent command of both written and spoken Modern Greek language (the written part of the examination consists of a translation into Modern Greek, a translation from Modern Greek, and an essay on a given topic; dictionaries are not allowed), ability to explain grammatical and syntactic phenomena (oral examination).
  • 2. Good knowledge of Byzantine and older Modern Greek literature within the scope of Introduction to Byzantology and Greek Literature of the 16th –18th centuries.   • 4. General knowledge of history of Greece of the 16th – 18th centuries (subject History of Greece in the 16th – 18th centuries).
