Upper-intermediate language skills in English, ability to actively participate in class discussions and basic experience in academic writing. (B2/C1)

Course objectives
By the end of this course, the students will be able to write and critically asses a well structured abstract of a scientific article, they will be aware of typical features of academic writing within its structure and will have samples of their own writing assessed in an international forum discussion. The aim of the course is to expose students to texts which contain these typical characteristics as well as to practice their own writing style.
Syllabus
  • Through class discussion and videoconferencing connections with experts, the students will practice the following aspects of English academic writing: 1. general characteristics and types of writing, 2. complex structure of academic writing, 3. academic writing style, 4. paragraph, its composition, length and cohesion, 5. academic text types (definitions, examples, classification, comparing and contrasting, cause and effect), 6. plagiarism and referencing, quoting, paraphrasing and summarising.

Assessment methods
Requirements: The students are expected to actively participate in three seminars which will have the form of a class peer discussion and video conference discussion with experts from abroad. They will also be expected to play an active role in the e-forum and deliver samples of their writing for class assessment.
