English for the Deaf is the recognized alternative to any compulsory course of English run by the Masaryk University offered to Deaf and hearing-impaired students. The course is composed of three modules. The first module reviews elementary and lower intermediate grammar of English and vocabulary of closed word-classes. Students graduating from the second module are expected, first, to be able to use a learner's English-English dictionary, that is are expected to understand most words in its definition word list, and second, to have read several shorter stories in English. Students enrolled in the third module further develop their English by reading an undergraduate textbook of their choice. Overall, graduates of the course are expected to be able to read academic prose in English.
