Course objectives
During the Special Seminar, students write their seminar work on one of the topics, which they are assigned at the beginning of the course. The students present, defend and correct their working papers in seminars. Topics are chosen from applied economic policy. Especially, topics include both theoretical problems requiring knowledge of principal economic theory, and a practical part requiring active work on data searching etc.
Main objectives can be summarized as follows:

- to develop an ability of critical thinking;
- to apply theory from Economics and Economic Policy to particular practical examples; - to appreciate benefits and limits of economic theory in solving particular economic problems.

  • 1) Regulation and deregulation of a rent - impacts of deregulation on the supply, demand and rental housing prices in Brno)
  • 2) Impact of the CAP on food prices
  • 3) Economic costs of corruption - relation to economic growth
  • 4) Benefits and costs of the regional policy - convergence or divergence
  • 5) Czech public finance "black holes"- the most important expenditures
  • 6) Fuel market cartels - Brno: cartel or following up the price leader
  • 7) Traffic infrastructure (roads vs. railroads, public private partnership)

Assessment methods
The course has a form of seminars. Students write their seminar work on one of the topics during the semester. The course is concluded by a credit after the successful seminar work defence.
