Syllabus
  • Brief description of computer algebra. Present and little history of computer algebra systems (CAS). Systems REDUCE, MACSYMA, DERIVE, MATCAD, Maple, Mathematica, AXIOM, etc and their history. Some properties of CAS. Advantages and limitations of CAS for education.
  • Design of Maple (user interface - Iris, basic algebraic engine- kernel, external and share library, programming language). Maple categories of basic CAS objects (numbers and assigned or unassigned names). Maple names, variables and statements, composite data types, mathematical functions, assume facility, simplification. Differentiation, integration, summation, limits, products, series and function approximation. Solving equations, solving ODE and PDE. Linear algebra and student packages.
  • Using Maple worksheets in education. Interactive mathematical visualization, a graphical user interface with real mathematical input and output, word-processing facilities and their using to prepare Maple worksheets for educational purposes.
  • Base principles using CAS in teaching mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, economy and other sciences. Methods of white box a black box. Examples of Maple courses of calculus, linear algebra, physics and mechanics.
  • Student project of teaching mathematics, physics or another scientific topic using Maple with respect to secondary school teaching programs.
