Syllabus
  • Database model as a type system for a query language. Kinds of query languages. Formal notions of database query, query language, expressive power of query languages. Relational completeness.
  • Domain Relational Calculus (DRC), save expressions. Equivalence of DRC and relational algebra. Query Transitive closure. Datalog, fixpoint semantics, Datalog with negation, stratification.
  • Query evaluation. Implementation of relational operations, query optimization.
  • Text databases, document models, querying texts, signatures.
  • Mark-up languages XML, query languages over XML databases.
