Course objectives
Obtaining an overview of the legal regulation of sport in its position within the Czech Republic, the EU and international sports associations. Moreover, creating a comprehensive legal orientation on the Czech legal order, legal awareness of the status of sport in the context of the Constitution of the Czech Republic and the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Basic Freedoms and other important norms related to sport issues.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student will be able to get an overview in in the national legislation of the Czech Republic and the European Union and gain a practical insight into the sport law. He will understand issues of concluding sports contracts, establishing societies and other sports organizations, functioning of international sports associations, and gain insight into the criminal and civil liability of sportspeople and doping issues.

  • 1. General introduction to law. Hierarchy of norms. Civil and public law. Sources of law. Sport Law within the Czech legal order.
  • 2. Legal Entities in Relation to Sport.
  • 3. Importance of Public Registers and Law of Associations.
  • 4. Relationship of the State and Sport. Autonomy of Subjects. Financing Sports.
  • 5. Rights and Obligations of Sports Entities within the Czech Legal Order. Taxes in Sport and Internal Norms.
  • 6. Contractual Relations in Sport. Professional Sports Contracts and Their Importance. Excursion to the Regulation of Sports Contracts in Other EU Countries.
  • 7. Civil Liability in Sport. Accountability of Athletes for Injuries.
  • 8. Criminal Liability in Sport. Accident Liability. Economic Crime in Sport.
  • 9. Criminal Liability in Sport II. Unlawful Actions of Sport Fans.
  • 10. Dispute Resolution in Sport. Judicial Protection. Arbitrage.
  • 11. EU law, European Jurisprudence and the Role of International Sports Organizations.

Teaching methods
After passing lectures and exercises the student will receive a credit from the subject. The course is finished by an oral exam. The seminars discuss specific contractual examples, in the context of sport and law. With regard to the given issue, the lack of publications in practice and the difficulty in obtaining other relevant resources, attendance at the lectures is a prerequisite for the completion of the subject.
Assessment methods
After passing the lectures in the necessary extent and exercises within the seminars, the student receives the credit from the subject. The course is finished by an oral exam.
