- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to apply key principles of nutrition to the field of sport on the basis of the specifics of practiced sports training in an effort to support training adaptation, regeneration and sporting performance.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course students will be able to:
- characterize the specifics of sports nutrition and to distinguish them from non-sports nutrition practises;
- orientate and correctly interpret the latest nutritional recommendations for athletes in support of the regeneration, adaptation and sports performance;
- apply basic knowledge of human nutrition to the environment of various sports disciplines;
- assess and correct the nutritional needs of athletes of various ages and the varying intensity of the training process;
- analyze the nutritional needs of the athlete;
- Apply specific nutritional strategies optimizing sports performance;
- Identify the health risks resulting from the variable training process and can recommend appropriate nutritional measures;
- recommend the use of dietary supplements and sports foods to optimize sports training. - Syllabus
- Overview of sports nutrition (basics, terminology)
- Nutrition issues in preparation for competition and training, during exercise and for recovery after training and competition
- Hydration strategies pre, during and post competition and training; dehydration in sport
- Nutrition issues in an endurance athlete - the role of carbohydrates
- Nutrition in a strength athlete - the role of protein
- Sport specific nutrition (team sports, winter sports, etc.)
- Application of nutritional supplements in sports environment; the role of ergogenic aids
- Specific health issues related to sports nutrition; nutrition for special populations: children and the aging athlete
