Course objectives
The course provides students with the understanding of the theory and practices of alliances and regional security institutions.
Learning outcomes
After the end of the course: - students should be able to understand main concepts of theory of alliances; - students should be able to interpret and explain the formation and dissolution of individual alliances; - students should be able to understand the processes of institutionalization and socialisation within individual alliance structures; - students should be able to analyze the functioning of main international alliances and their role in current international system;

  • 1. Key terms, typology of alliances 2. Overview of history of alliances 3. International Relations theory and alliance formation I. (realism and neo-realism) 4. International Relations theory and alliance formation II. (liberal institutionalism, economic theory of alliances) 5. Institutionalization and socialization of alliances 6. Functions of alliances 7. Alliance security dilemma in bipolarity, multipolarity and unipolarity 8. Fungování aliancí vzhledem k dělbě zisků a nákladů (bezpečnost jako veřejný statek, problematika „černých pasažérů“) 9. Agregace zájmů členských států a řízení činnosti aliance v mezinárodním prostředí, rozpuštění či zánik aliancí a regionálních bezpečnostních institucí 10. Vojenská aliance: Nástroj ke stabilizaci bezpečnostního prostředí nebo katalyzátor ozbrojeného konfliktu? 11. Proměna aliancí a regionálních bezpečnostních institucí po konci studené války a teroristických útocích z 11. září 2001 a jejich budoucnost I. 12. Teaching methods
Lectures involve class discussions and require active participation of students. Seminar paper and position papers aims to improve the ability of students to analyze issues of alliances and regional security institutions and to work with primary and secondary sources. Readings serve to broaden and deepen the spectrum of knowledge students acquire during lectures.
