Course objectives
Course offers a sociological interpretation of the interdependence of globalisation and cultural change. It focuses both on institutional structures and historical development of globalisation. Conceptually, globalisation is conceived as a radicalisation of modernity and processes of modernisation. The first part deals with the following issues: interrelation of globalisation and modernity from the perspective of the sociology of social change, historical development of the world-system and its precondition in Europan colonialism, concentration and accumlation of capital and its effect on the world-economy, modern state in the environment of interdependence and political globalisation. The second part deals with the issues of modern and postmodern form of social integration via commodification and consumer culture.
