- Course objectives
- Students become known with the core concepts of the discipline. On successful completion of the course student should be able to interpret clients living circumstances in terms of “living situation” and “social problem” concepts, to distinguish between “questions on the client’s living situation” and “questions on helping intervention” as well as to compare the discourses by “social worker” and by “social policy maker”.
- Syllabus
- The course is devoted to the following topics and issues:
- 1. Social work and social policy as helping professions.
- 2. „Uncertain interactions between man and society“.
- 3. „Living situation”.
- 4. „Social problem“.
- 5. Similarities and differences between social policy and social work.
- 6. „Cognitive context of understanding living situations”.
- 7. Typology of social work.
- 8. Subdivisions of social work.
- 9. Subdivisions of social policy.
- 10. The usage of research methodology ín social policy and social work.
- 11. Community work and the policy of social services – the intersections between social policy and socialn work.
- 12. Standards of social work education and the conception of studies in social policy and social work.
- 13. The conception of studies in social policy and social work in terms of the “living situation” concept.

- Teaching methods
- The learning outcomes of the course will be attained by means of following teaching methods: 1. lectures, 3. reading, 2. writing an essay, 3. group consultations concerning writing essay.
- Assessment methods
- The course is completed by exam which consists in elaborating the essay on: „The selected client’s living situation in terms of the theory, the social worker as well as social policy maker discourses”. Essay is assessed in terms of following abilities of student: 1. interpreting the selected client’s living circumstances in terms of the “living situation” concept, 2. distinguishing “questions on the selected client’s living situation” and “questions on helping intervention”, 3. identify similarities and differences between discourses of two actors of helping intervention in living situation of the selected client – his or her social worker and relevant social policy maker.
