Prerequisites
The course is designed primarily for BA students of International Relations or European Studies in the BA study cycle. The course is composed of lectures and seminars. It presupposes student’s active participation.

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide the students with a basic notion of international migration and migration policies phenomena, primarily from the perspective of European studies and international relations. However, interdisciplinary research of international migration is taken into account. At the end of the course students should be able to: • understand current issues and trends of international migration • understand the basic concepts related to the issues of international migration and migration policies • understand migration trends in the 20th and 21th century • understand the context of a migration crisis in Europe • understand the role of governmental and nongovernmental actors in issues of international migration and migration policy • to present a position on selected issues of migration policy during the workshops
Syllabus
  • Week 1.: Introduction, motivation, conditions of completion. Week 2: Migration: History, Present, Multidisciplinary. Weeks 3.: Migration and migration policies in the Western Europe. Week 4.: Migration and migration policies in the Mediterranean. Week 5.: Migration and migration policies in Central and Eastern Europe. Week 6.: Introduction to the EU migration policy. Week 7.: The migration crisis. Week 8.: Impact of the Migration crisis on EU policies and politics. Week 9.: Normative aspects of migration. Securitization of migration. Week 10.: Workshop: European migration policies in practice. Week 11.: Migration in the global context: refugees, influence of non-governmental actors Week 12.: Workshop: Media Image of Migration: Migration stereotypes and myths. Week 13.: 21st century migration? Discussion.

Lecture, seminar/workshop, group presentation, discussion.
Assessment methods
The overall grade is based on the number of points (maximum 100); includes a written test (maximum 55b), paper (30b), active participation (15b). 100-94 points: A 93-87 points: B 86-80 points: C 79-73 points: D 72-66 points: E 65 points or less: F
