Course objectives
The course is focusing on the political evolution of Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia in the last decade of the 20 th century with the stress put on short introduction into historical background of important events, analysis of political and constitutional systems. Substantive part of the course is dedicated to foreign policy issues, that play role in influencing the position of Baltic states on the international scene, especially to relations with Russian Federation, USA, NATO and EU.
Syllabus
  • 1. Theoretical basis for analysis of geopolitical factors influencing the position of Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia 2. Gaining of independence after WWI-specifics of individual states 3. Functioning of democratic and constitutional institutions in the inter war period 4. The period of Soviet dominance 5. Renewal of independence and the road to pluralist society - internal political situation in Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia 6. The evolution of Russian foreign and security policy toward Baltic states 7. Kaliningrad region and question of independence of Baltic states 8. Evolution of the attitude of the USA towards enlarging of the NATO and security of Baltic states 9. Baltic states and especially Lithuania in Polish foreign and security policy 10. Evolution of European foreign policy towards Baltic states 11. Regional cooperation in the Baltic sea region-key partners for Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia
