Course objectives
The course is only for those students of Media Studies and journalism WITHOUT specialisation. The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the functioning of a specific editorial board so that they could try their own skills and qualifications for performing the profession in practice. Another aim is to allow the students to become “independent”, being able not only to fulfil the given tasks but also to come up with their own ideas. The students will become familiar with common press conferences and fieldwork. Reporters will initiated the students into the principles of taking photographs on location (in case of both printed and Internet media), and on the theoretical level, the students will acquire the corresponding knowledge of not only the form and content of new materials, but also the functioning of public administration, local authorities, and other bodies and institutions of public life at leas on the district level. If possible, more proficient students may also gain basic knowledge of editing articles and page layout or, in case of radio, television or the Internet, adequate technical knowledge applicable for editorial work in the specific medium. At the end of the internship, they will be able to produce a news material from an idea, through finding sources and the material production, to possible final adaptation and publishing in a specific medium.
Syllabus
  • Students take part in the introductory seminar in which further details are to be set. For the give period of time, they attend a selected news editorial board (with an editorial team, daily operation and daily outputs) of a newspaper, radio or television (or exceptionally an Internet medium). The choice of the editorial board must be agreed beforehand with the lecturer. At the start of the internship, students have already acquired the following skills. Editors-in-chief may thus rely on the fact that the trainees will be able to produce texts in these genres without any serious difficulties. However, students should be assigned tasks and initiated to the “common” reporter's work gradually according to the proposed timetable (this is particularly valid for printed media, while the procedure is similar in other editorial teams): 1. in brief (local report, notice and invitation) 2. survey 3. transcribing agency news 4. press conference news item 5. extended news item 6. feature (story) 7. report 8. interview 9. note, short essay and comment Note: The internship lasts for the whole semester, whereas the student is required to attend the editorial board at least once a week. The student negotiates the training in the chosen editorial board individually after the preliminary agreement with the lecturer. The internship usually takes place in one medium, and all the exceptions are to be agreed by the lecturer. The internship may take place in the Czech Republic or abroad. The internship may be recognised to those students who work or worked (not more than 5 years ago) for media in the extent corresponding to the above mentioned internship conditions.
