Course objectives
The goal of the course MVZ214 The State of Israel in the Context of International Relations aims to acquaint students with the key factors that influence the position of Israel in the system of international relations. During the course, students will devote their attention to the evaluation of Israeli foreign policy - the emphasis will be given to the position of Israel both in the region and the western world (e.g. on the platforms of UN, EU etc.). At the end of this course, students should be able to analyse the most important trends in the context of Israeli foreign policy; and to demonstrate their ability to use historical documents and primary sources.
Syllabus
  • 1) Introduction. The historical development to the First World War.
  • 2) The historical development from First World War to 2000.
  • 3) The role of Jewish diaspora in the context of international relations.
  • 4) Israeli political parties and their attitudes towards the crucial foreign affairs issues.
  • 5) The role of religion in Israeli politics and society.
  • 6) Documentary movie and discussion.
  • 7) Cross-border relations of Israel: Focused on religions.
  • 8) Reading week - no class.
  • 9) The position of the State of Israel in the context of international relations: Israel in the Middle East.
  • 10) The position of the State of Israel in the context of international relations: Israel and the western world.
  • 11) Security issues in the context of Arab-Israeli conflict.
  • 12) Arab-Israeli peace process.
  • 13) Contemporary Israel - the development since 2000.

Teaching methods
Lectures involve theoretical background of particular topics. Seminar papers aim to improve the ability of students to analyze issues of Israel's position in the system of international relations as well as the ability to use historical documents and primary sources and to work with them properly.
Assessment methods
The course is finished by an written exam. It requires fulfilling of semester tasks. The final grade will be calculated as a composite evaluation consisting of seminar presence and activity, research paper, map quiz, writing midterm test and final test.
