Course objectives
The course enables students to meet real ways of funding real projects in the field of social policy and social work from national and European sources. It enables students especially to develop the skills needed for writing such projects because students are taught how to design and write their own project aimed at the specific target group in a specific region/locality.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students gain key theoretical and practical knowledge about the ways of creating and managing projects in the field of social policy and social work with regard to available financial, personnel, and technological resources. They will create (write) their own viable project, which will be the result of their ability: to identify key problems of the specific issue in the selected region / locality, and to propose specific goals and measures leading to their achievement.
Syllabus
  • 1) Introduction to the course: the subject matter and optimal design practices in public and social policy and social work. Assignment and explanation of the first three steps of the project. (theoretical and empirical possibilities of viewing social problems, defining projects, institutions, management vs. defining the creation of projects and the project cycle)
  • 2) Identification of social problems and their causes in relation to the choice of relevant tools of intervention in social policy and social work: use of theories of social deviations and organizational theories (existing ways of solving social problems (solutions to organizational problems, methods and techniques of interventions towards specific target groups of clients) , the causes of social problems in organizations, in individuals and groups according to existing social deviant theories (theory of learning, tension, control, labelling) and other theories (psychological, psychiatric, health, etc.), the connection of existing intervention tools used in the field of work socialization and helping professions on the causes of the problems of the project's target groups)
  • 3) Problems of project feasibility: project implementation and implementation failure during their implementation (methods of viewing and evaluating projects in the process of their implementation, identification of key factors that influence the success of projects, elimination of potential or real problems during project implementation)
  • 4) Use of ESIF funds and other domestic and foreign sources to finance projects in the field of (not only) social work (types of ESIF funds and other sources of financing, existing types of financed projects and their importance/role, possibilities of their financing, methods of evaluation)
  • 5) Financial balance of projects: types of costs, budget creation
  • 6) Group and individual consultation of already implemented project steps, presentation of project creation procedures by students

Group projects, homework, class discussion, final project.
Assessment methods
The course emphasizes the student's independent creative activity supported by numerous consultations with the teacher. The course begins with the selection of a real issue and the definition of the problem on which the project focuses, and ends with the submission of viable project that solves a real problem situation. The elaboration of this project has a cumulative character, i.e. the current works (steps) follow the previous works.
