Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the current demographic development, new trends in the concept of old age, developments in social work with the elderly and the provision of assistance and support to seniors with reduced self-sufficiency in the Czech Republic and other countries. The basic forms and types of provision of social services and the financial aspects of the provision of assistance and support, including the care allowance, are presented. Special space is devoted to the provision of assistance in residential care facilities. The risks of residential care are discussed. A separate section is devoted to the provision of informal care and the availability of outpatient and outreach services.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- understand the provision of assistance and support in the context of demographic developments in the Czech Republic and developed countries;
- understand the main principles of ageing and ageing policy in the Czech Republic and the EU;
- explain current trends in social services for the elderly;
- distinguish the specifics of different forms and types of social services for the elderly;
- compare the provision of social services in the Czech Republic with other EU countries;
- understand the specificities of informal care provision;
- assess the effectiveness of the provision of social services for the elderly at local level;
- to propose reasoned decisions when developing concepts of social services for the elderly.

Assessment methods
The condition for successful completion of the course is participation in selected seminars, submission of written reflections by the deadline, preparation of an individual project and written test.
