Prerequisites
The course is aimed at foreign undergraduate students wishing to acquire basic knowledge and skills in French through English. The students will have completed the course CJVF001 French for Beginners.

Course objectives
The objective of the course is to build the knowledge of French at the A1-A2 level of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). At the end of the course, the student will be able to understand phrases and the highest frequency vocabulary related to areas of most immediate personal relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, local area, work in diplomacy). He will also be able to read very short, simple texts, find specific, predictable information in simple everyday material. Also, the student will be able to communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics and activities, to describe in simple terms the family and other people, living conditions, educational background and present or most recent job. Last but not least, he will be able to write short, simple notes and messages relating to matters in areas of immediate needs, as well as a very simple personal letter.

  • Week 1 revisions Week 2-3 numbers 20-100; passé récent, futur proche, possessives; family; talk about your family; managing your time Week 3-4 pouvoir, devoir, vouloir, COD/COI; making a phone call; imperative; taking a message, giving your phone number Week 5-6 le passé composé, negation of articles (un, des), adverbs; leisure time; asking about leisure activities Week 7-8 mettre, savoir, attendre, il y a, c’est/ce sont (rappel), prepositions and adverbs of space; office equipment, house; describing a place and localising in space Week 9-10 prendre, descendre, ordinal numbers, celle, celui; at the ministry of foreign affairs Week 10-11 pronouns; conditional; placement of adjective; adverbs; possessive pronouns; comparative and superlative; shopping and location; types of accommodation; Week 12-13 indirect questions; gerund; pronouns and indefinite adjectives; l'imparfait et le passé composé; airplane, train, hotel; programme of work and visit; negotiations; international relations Week 13 oral exam + revisions
