Course objectives
The main objective of this course is to introduce students to the field of visual culture and to offer a set of methods, approaches and tools for analyzing various types of visual materials. The course includes an in-depth overview of the sociocultural developments that have given rise to the field of visual culture and visual studies today. Through lectures, group discussions, interactive exercises and screenings, this course provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the field of contemporary visual culture and practices including the field’s main concepts, theories and methods.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, a student will be able to:
o historicize and describe various sociocultural and technological developments that have contributed to the emergence of visual culture as a phenomenon and a field of research.
o articulate and apply the main concepts of visual culture studies as discussed in this course.
o articulate and illustrate the various roles and functions of the visual in social science research.
o interpret and discuss visual materials with the help of various theoretical approaches and research methods.
Syllabus
  • Introduction to visual culture studies as a field of research
  • Key concepts of contemporary visual culture and visual/digital practices
  • Screening, discussion and interpretation of visual materials (photography, video, websites, narrative film)
  • Introduction to visual research methods and visual literacy skills

Assessment methods
40% written essay (instructions will be given in class); 60% written exam.
