Course objectives
The course is intended for students new to doctoral studies, who present working versions of dissertation projects to other students and teachers (typically projects in the form in which they are at the end of the first semester of study). The presentation is expected to include (1) a brief explanation of the topic being addressed and its theoretical framework, (2) identification of knowledge gaps and the theoretical problem, (3) a description of the methods and data sources being considered, (4) a brief overview of the timeline of research and publication activities (i.e. what studies are tentatively planned for the dissertation and when they will be implemented). The presented proposal is commented on by the supervisor and a selected fellow student from among more experienced doctoral students, and is subsequently discussed by the seminar participants. The aim of the course is to provide broader feedback to new students and to familiarize other students with newly addressed dissertation topics. Presentations usually take place as part of the research workshop of the Department of Media Studies and Journalism, which is always organized each semester during the exam period. The choice of presentation language is up to the students. It is recommended to complete the course during the 1st semester of study.
