- Course objectives
- The course introduces students to the basics of communication in English within the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. The main topics covered in the individual units include: i) the structure and functioning of the ICU and typical patients, ii) communication with the healthcare team, patients, and family members, iii) handling difficult situations such as complaints, conflicts, and ethical issues, iv) performing basic nursing care (e.g., personal hygiene, mobility, elimination), v) infection prevention and the use of protective equipment, vi) patient discharge from the ICU and communication with follow-up services. The instruction combines professional vocabulary, grammatical structures (conditional sentences, relative clauses, reported speech, passive voice), and professional communication skills in authentic nursing situations.
- Learning outcomes
- By the end of the course, the student will possess the following knowledge, skills, and competencies: i) Knowledge: understanding the specific language and professional terminology used in the ICU environment, including hygiene, technical, and clinical procedures; ii) Skills: effectively communicating in English with patients, their families, and the healthcare team, including explaining medical conditions, educating patients, and addressing ethical situations; iii) Competencies: using English with an emphasis on accuracy, politeness, and cultural sensitivity in the context of daily patient care in the ICU.

- Assessment methods
- The above-mentioned topics are practiced using all study skills (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Supplementary learning materials, in printed or electronic form, are provided by the instructor. The course is concluded with an exam consisting of a written and an oral part. A minimum score of 70% is required in each part.
