Syllabus
  • BASIC MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY - lecture. Syllabus.
  • 1st week: Introduction to the study of the subject: significance and contents of the course, methodological instructions, study literature. Characteristics of graphical and acoustic form of Latin. Selected Greek sounds, transcription into Latin. Latin and Greek nouns of 1st declension, adjectives of 1st declension.
  • 2nd week: Introduction to grammatical problems: basic morphological categories and their specific features in medical terminology; syntactic structure of multiple medical terms, basic types of domination relations, close and loose attributes, word order. Latin and Greek nouns of 2nd declension, adjectives of 2nd declension.
  • 3rd week: Word-forming characteristics of one-word terms, overview of basic models. Latin and Greek nouns of 3rd declension (consonant stems and i-stems).
  • 4th week: The language of medicine with its functions and characteristics; medical terms - their etymology and definition. Adjectives of 3rd declension (three-termination, two-termination, and one-termination adjectives).
  • 5th week: Renowned personalities of medicine in ancient history, historical aspects of medical terminology against the background of the history of medicine. Latin nouns of 4th and 5th declensions.
  • 6th week: History and present state of anatomical nomenclature - BNA, JNA, PNA, NA. Comparison of adjectives (regular, irregular, defective, and periphrastic comparison).
  • 7th week: Present state of clinical terminology, eponyms. The most common adverbs, prepositions, selected conjunctions.
  • 8th week: Mechanism of application of close and loose attributes in NA. Restored pronunciation. Numerals: cardinal, ordinal, distributive, multiple numerals, and numeral adverbs. Objects next to numerals.
  • 9th week: Verbs: infinitive, imperative, present passive subjunctive, present active and perfect passive participles, gerundive, and gerund.The components of a case history.
  • 10th week: A minimum of prescription Latin: definition prerequisites of professional communication between a doctor and a pharmacist, factual and formal grammatical structure of medical prescription.
  • 11th week: Formation of words (1) - basic rules of derivation. Latin prefixes, their meanings and mutual relations: polysemy, synonymy, antonymy, and homonymy of prefixes.
  • 12th week: Greek prefixes, their meanings and mutual relations. Post mortem diagnoses as an example of authentic application of Latin in medical practice.
  • 13th week: Latin and Greek suffixes; definite suffixes and suffixes with multiple function. Borrowed words of Latin and Greek origin: sound adaptation and orthography.
  • 14th week: Formation of words (2) - basic rules of composition: Latin and Greek compound words, hybrid words, productive word-forming components, combining morphemes. Latin and Greek equivalents of basic medical terms.
  • 15th week: Final summary, requirements for the examination.

Assessment methods (in Czech)
Povinná účast na přednáškách vyplývá ze studijního řádu. Výuka je ukončena zkouškou (Zk), která probíhá převážně ústní formou, avšak zahrnuje i kratší písemnou část v podobě překladu klinických a recepturních termínů z češtiny do latiny. Obsahem ústní odpovědi je mluvnický rozbor vybraných latinských anatomických a klinických termínů, určování a obměňování gramatických kategorií a výklad odborně relevantního gramatického jevu; následují konkrétní úkoly ze slovotvorby a prověřování lexikálních znalostí. Doplňkovou součást zkoušky představují otázky z teorie terminologie (historické aspekty, současný stav vývoje, charakteristické znaky apod.).
