Course objectives
The subject is conceived as a theoretical-practical unit. Forming the basis of the nurse's professional knowledge and skills in making contact and gaining the patient's trust and for further effective and high quality care of his individual needs. The main priority of the subject is to provide students with the required content of theoretical knowledge, as well as communication skills, to enable them to conduct themselves professionally in a variety of situations when providing nursing care to patients and their loved ones, but also when communicating within a multidisciplinary team. The aim of the subject is: - Understand and teach students how to use individual effective methods of social interaction and communication in the provision of nursing care with regard to the health status and specific needs of patients and their family members. - Practice basic communication strategies contributing to the professional development of the student's personality, - Identify factors influencing the communication process.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to: - characterize the components of the communication process; - distinguish between verbal and nonverbal communication; - describe factors influencing the communication process; - explain types of communication; - distinguish between communication styles; - realize in formal and informal interview with the patient and his/her family; communicate and cooperate in a team; - distinguish evaluation and devaluation elements of communication attitudes of health professionals; - identify problematic / specific areas of the communication process (communication barrier, patient or family non-cooperation, aggression in health care, patient and family specific needs with respect to age, health condition, disability, etc.); - use alternative and augmentative communication systems; - explain the patient's attitudes towards health and illness, describe the stages of experiencing the illness (by the patient, family, health attitude); - describe the issue of dying and death, identify the desired skills of a health care professional; - use effective communication strategies to provide nursing practice - apply productive behavior and communication skills in practice.

Teaching methods
Lecture and practical exercises with the use of interactive teaching techniques (group discussion - group work - simulation of specific needs in communication - role playing - training of selected communication strategies)
Assessment methods
During the semester there is a block of exercises (students are divided into groups). Assessment methods and criteria: interview, discussion in the course, fulfillment of continuous requirements for solving problems in the course.
