Basic high school physics knowledge level plus the finishing of biophysically oriented subjects in bachelor study programme.

Course objectives
At the of the course students should be able: understand and explein the principles and method of devices used in general medicine; to recognize possible risks connected with the use of some medical devices (of mechanical, electromagnetic or optical character, ionizing radiation); to accept rules and methods of safe use of this devices - both in patients and in the healthcare professionals.

  • Physical principles of medical technology.
  • Medicine and technology. Biosignals and their processing.
  • Conventional X-ray imaging methods.
  • Modern tomographic methods (CT, MRI).
  • Radionuclide diagnostics.
  • Methods and instruments for ionising radiation therapy.
  • Measurement and registration of temperature.
  • Optical laboratory instruments.Optical diagnostic instruments.
  • Electrodiagnostic methods
  • Ultrasound imaging.
  • Ultrasound Doppler and duplex methods.
  • Measurement and registration of mechanical quantities.
  • Methods and instruments used in physiotherapy.
  • Modern physical methods in surgery. Lithotripsy.
  • Artificial body organs.
  • Legislation framework of medical devices.

Assessment methods
The exam consists of written test consisting of 25 questions and oral part, which can be done only when the number of correctly answered question is 14 at least. The oral part consists of 2 questions as a rule. The examined student has to be able explain the problems and characterise their possible clinical importance.
