Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquire basic knowledge of neurology. The content of the study will focus on basic and specific nutritional care in patients with neurological diseases. The student will know prevention, diagnostics, treatment and specialized nutritional procedures in individual diseases, will be able to assess the nutritional status of the client / patient and to draw up a plan of individual nutritional care for clients / patients and evaluate the effectiveness of individual nutritional procedures.

Syllabus
  • A spectrum of nutritionally hazardous neurological diseases. Diagnosis, treatment options, complications. Determination of nutritional needs in relation to diagnosis, length of hospitalization, organism adaptation, rehabilitation and follow-up care. Importance and role of interdisciplinary cooperation. Syllabus of lectures: Neuron, neural cell structure. Structure of central and peripheral nervous system. Primary muscle diseases. Diseases of the peripheral nervous system. Functions of brain hemispheres. Vascular supply to the brain. Symptoms of stroke ischemic and haemorrhagic. Synapses and neurotransmitters. Physiological and pathological functioning of synapses. Structure and function of the cerebral cortex. Epilepsy and epileptic syndromes. Headaches. Structure and function of basal ganglia. Degenerative diseases of the brain and extrapyramidal diseases. Cerebellum structure and function. Structures of the brain stem. Cerebellar syndromes, stem syndromes. Inflammatory diseases of the nervous system. Multiple sclerosis. Spinal cord structure and function. Spinal cord syndromes. Motor and sensory disorders due to spinal cord lesions. Spinal and intracranial tumours. Brain and spinal cord traumas. Structure and function of the spine. Vertebrogenic diseases.
