Course objectives
Hygiene and epidemiology are the biomedical foundations of primary disease prevention.
Importance in teaching lies in the awareness and understanding of the complex connections between the effects of the environment and the working environment and the possible emergence of diseases in the individual and in the population.
Knowledge then provides a basis for responsible and qualified decisions with all economic and legal consequences.
The course Hygiene and Epidemiology II is a follow-up to the introductory part of the course Hygiene and Epidemiology I with selected topics focused on current and necessary topics in the given issue. Their urgency and need for solutions require deeper knowledge in the field.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student will:
- have an overview of current health issues,
- be able to make an informed evaluation of priorities in the protection and promotion of health,
- know the context affecting the development of local and international epidemics,
- effectively target preventive efforts.
Syllabus
  • Current epidemiological threats in the world and the Czech Republic.
  • New and recurrent infections, antibiotic resistance.
  • Heath care associated infections - a comprehensive view of the issue.
  • Vaccination, vaccination programs, vaccination of adults and at-risk population groups, including health professionals.
  • Environmental changes and socio-economic situation as factors influencing the spread of infections.
  • Biological weapons and bioterrorism.
  • Drinking water: guidelines for drinking water quality and the supply.
  • Health impacts of contaminants in food chains.
  • Nutrient and food recommendations.
  • Food catering services in healthcare facilites and nursing homes.
  • Waste and healht.
  • Indoor and health: specific issues in healtcare facilities and nursing homes.
  • Biological exposure tests.
  • Introduction to the health risk assesment.

Written test - 20 questions with choice of answers, only one is correct.
Correct answer - 1 credit, incorrect - 0 credit. For succesfully passing the test is necessary to achieve 14 credits.
