Course objectives
This course acquaints its students with the rudimentary practices of creative writing. Special emphasis is placed on practical exercises which can be used in teaching practice or in one's own creative writing.
Learning outcomes
After completing this course, students will :
- understand various forms and structures of fiction, poetry and non-fiction
- develop their own individual style
- demonstrate knowledge of editing and revision techniques
- produce several original works of fiction and poetry

  • Week 1: Please Introduce Yourselves
  • acrostic poem; interview; (micro-fiction)
  • Week 2: Everyone Loves a Mystery
  • literary genres; mystery: point of view
  • Week 3: Once Upon a Time
  • stereotypes in fairy tales; re-writing the stories
  • Week 4: Tell all the Truth but tell it slant
  • poetry, metaphors, imagery, line breaks
  • Week 5: “When the doorbell rings at three in the morning, it’s never good news.”

Teaching methods
This class uses a variety of methods including mini-lecture, group discussions, presentations, and projects on Moodlinka.
Assessment methods
This course is designed as a practical course, which means that a lot of writing will be involved. Attendance at class meetings is essential and required in order to pass the class. Completion of the course is based upon completion of weekly assignments and a short self evaluation essay.
