Course objectives
This American history seminar is intended to be taken concurrently with the lecture half of the course. While the lecture provides the general outline of American history, this seminar meets for 2 hours every fortnight to focus on one specific issue of that history. The form is that of a classic seminar wherein students are assigned texts containing various viewpoints on the given subject and then come to class prepared to discuss the issue in open conversation around the seminar table. Aside from the ability to think analytically and a knowledge of history and culture, this method gives the student practice speaking before a group, thus training them to lead discussions in their own classrooms. The course ends with a research paper.
