Course objectives
The Academic Skills: Reading course is designed to help students with using library and computer-based resources, reading academic texts effectively and efficiently and taking notes from reference books. The course introduces the techniques of skimming, scanning and searching a text, and critical reading, and encourages learners to reflect on their current reading strategies. Additional aims of the course are to help students build academic vocabulary and to provide them with practice in logging sources.
Syllabus
  • 1.Reading strategies. Reading efficiency and reading speed. 2.Surveying a book/ journal. Using an index. 3.Looking up books/journals in a library catalogue. Creating a bibliography list. 4.Contextualizing a text. Using schemata knowledge. 5.Note-taking. Understanding terminology. 6.Reading for specific information. Scanning and skimming a text. 7.Careful reading. Identifying genre and text structure. Connecting ideas. 8.Excerpting citations. 9.Understanding tables and figures. Summarizing a text. 10.Critical reading. Comparing viewpoints.
