Course objectives
The aim of this course is to provide students with a means for developing and extending their use of English with particular emphasis on English related to teaching. It focusses on the English needed in the classroom, for studying the EFL teaching and learning, for participating in teacher development and teacher-training courses, conferences, workshops etc. The framework of the course is based upon a book called "English for the Teacher" (see Literature below) which is a language improvement course for teachers of English as a Foreing Language piloted successfully in various parts of the world with a range of different teachers.
Syllabus
  • The course will gradually cover Units 1-7 from English for the Teacher (see below), each session will also comprise students' presentations as well as extra practice of various aspects of grammar/vocabulary. Syllabus: Introduction - teaching English as a foreign language. Unit 1: About communication. Unit 2: About language learning. Unit 3: About you. Unit 4: Talking about coursebooks. Unit 5: Talking about lessons. Unit 6: Talking about relationships. Unit 7: Teacher development. Review of units 1-7.

Assessment methods
The classes will be based on class discussion, pair-work and group-work, listening, reading and speaking. A communicative approach will be used. Obtaining the final credit for this course draws on continuous assessment throughout the term, which comprises: - active participation, contribution and preparation - 1 written assignment - 1 oral presentation - 1 progress test The general passmark is 70%.
