A pass in SZ7BP_1AB1 The intermediate student (Level B1) can understand the main ideas of texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including special discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with partners without strain for either party. Can produce an essay on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Course objectives
Level B1 Course. Based on the common language learning skills, the student will learn and deepen some other academic skills (oral presentations, discussions, presenting and justifying the point, etc.) in English. The students will be assessed for their active participation in the course, oral and written assignments, as well as for final end-of-the-term tests level B1 (pass limit 65%) and their final specialized presentations (level B1).
Syllabus
  • SZ7BP_2AB1 Cizí jazyk B - jazyk anglický Weeks 1 - 3 Topic 1. Current problems in Czech schools. Advantages and disadvantages of teaching. Texts on bullying. (Discussion, arguments based on experience. Role-play.) Grammar revision: tenses revision Consequence of tenses Weeks 4 - 6 Topic 2. Rules and restrictions. Crime and punishment. Texts on the topic. (Discussion, arguing, supporting arguments. Presentation skills. Mini-presentations based on slogans, posters.) Grammar revision: Modals (probability) Conditionals Weeks 7- 9 Topic 3. Current issues in the world in respect to the students' specialization (environment, society including disabilities, gender, race, cultural differences, ethnic minorities, immigration, politics, terrorism, etc). Texts on various problems. (Discussion. Problem solving. Expressing opinion. Reflections based on notes, posters.) Grammar revision: Future tenses. Weeks 10 - 13 Topic 4. My field of study. Building specialized vocabulary. Conference presentations to fellow students with keywords and difficult vocabulary-board work. Current resources related to my specialization including e-resources. Professional language - skills and language of presentations. Exam requirements: - 80% attendance - written tasks (portfolio) + oral presentation must be fulfilled before the final test. A student who will not fulfill the above stated requirements will not be admitted to sit the final test! The mark: Final presentation (40%) Written test: Part A - grammar (30%) Part B - topics (30%) PRESENTATION requirements !! If a student does not give the final presentation in front of the class, he/she cannot be credited. If a student does not pass the final presentation, he/she must come to an oral exam and speak on the same topic but reaching the required level of presentation skills. !!

Assessment methods
Examination requirements: Written test Part A - grammar (30%) Part B - topics (30%) Final presentation (40%) !!
