Course objectives
The seminar introduces students to the essentials of the literary criticism. They will study the literary works from the period of the Enlightenment and National Revival. In the seminar the students will also learn about the ways of writing assignments. Students will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities, significant for that particular period. Students will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to literary history studies of the 19th century. 2. Information sources and ways of using them. 3. Conceptions of the National Revival, critical evaluation. 4. Czech publishing houses in the 19th century. 5. Selection of seminar paper topics. 6. Continuous checking (students presentations on a given seminar paper topic). 7. Methodology of writeing a seminar paper, rules and principles. 8. Final evaluation - end of term test and written assingments - seminar papers.

Teaching methods
Students will get an insight into basic trends and movements of Czech literature in the period in question, as well as into the specific nature of their poetics. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities, significant for that particular period. Students will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in contact classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
Assessment methods
Type of course: seminar. Type of completion: a written test in Czech literature of the first half of the 19th century and the enlightment literature. Students are also oblidged to hand in a seminar paper.
