Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be oriented in the field of sociology of family, including the contemporary changes of the family and partnership behaviour and Czech context. The course will include the basic knowledge from the field of gender and stratification studies in relation to the family sociology.
Syllabus
  • Function and the shape of family. Traditional, modern and postmodern family.
  • Assortative mating, marriage market, marriage squeeze, homogamy, heterogamy
  • Divorce, serial monogamy, alternative family forms
  • Parenthood, childlessness, motherhood, fatherhood, socialization in a family
  • Family and education, family and the reproduction of social inequalities
  • Gender, gender roles in family and school, gender socialization
  • Work and family, dual-career families
  • Czech family and its changes
