Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the rudimentary concepts behind literary multiculturalism and its most prominent features in North America through the analysis of a number of literary works. Students participating in the course will be offered a variety of methods for text analysis suited to multicultural writing. These methods and the provided socio-cultural information on various ethnic groups composing North American society will enable students to successfully identify and spell out certain characteristics of multicultural stories.

  • October 22nd - Multiculturalism in literature - general introduction
  • a.) Multiculturalism in a wider context/ multiculturalism in North American literature - a theoretical introduction illustrated through concrete examples
  • b.) identifying some key features of North American multicultural short stories through close reading
  • October 23rd: African Canadian/ American short stories
  • a.) socio-historical background information and important literary figures - a worksheet
  • b.) comparative analysis of two short stories by African Canadian/ American writers
