Course objectives
The goal is to provide students with information about the etymology of diachronic linguistics as discipline, methods, and introduce rules to reconstruct the phonological, morphological, word formation development. Part of the course is to intruduce to students etymological literature and improvement of knowledge that students have acquired in other linguistic disciplines. It is an integral part of dynamic examination of trends in contemporary vocabulary, using linguistic and developmental lexicological theoretical basis. Students will also learn the basic theoretica linguistic and semiotic approaches to the problem of spoken and written text. Students will acquire the ability to interpret texts in terms of interference and so-called speak and writing and learn to recognize the essential characteristics of the texts.
Syllabus
  • The course deals with the following topics: 1. Subject etymology. 2. Development of etymological research. Reconstruction of the proto-language, komparativ method. 3.Phonetic and semantic change. Verbal borrowings. 4. Onomaziologic description of lexical units (from meaning or function to the form). 5. Derivation and issues of language practice, language policy and linguistic culture. 6. Appellative diversity of needs in different spheres of communication. 7. Literary and nonliterary relationship vocabulary of Russian, means the tension between written and spoken. 8. Terminology, determinology, acceptance from foreign languages. 9. Neology use and phraseology, the current shifts in the lexical semantic level. 10. Institutional dialogue and their reliance on written texts. 11. Journalism: penetration of spoken language into written texts (interviews, advertising).
